Tree Planting
Once the land is carefully selected and prepared, we begin the heart of our mission: planting native deciduous trees that restore ecosystems and actively remove carbon from the atmosphere.
We focus primarily on oak species due to their resilience, long lifespan, and exceptional ability to sequester COâ‚‚. Depending on the location, we also plant other native trees such as chestnut, beech, and additional deciduous varieties that are well-suited to the local environment. We collaborate with local tree farms that specialize in growing native species from old, regionally adapted seeds, ensuring the long-term health and biodiversity of the forest.
For each site, we calculate the number of trees to plant based on the land’s size and condition. We typically use saplings that are two to three years old, young enough to establish strong root systems but mature enough to withstand early environmental challenges. These trees are planted with a spacing of approximately 3 meters by 3 meters. This allows each tree room to grow while eventually forming a canopy dense enough to suppress the return of brambles, thorns, and invasive weeds within 8 to 10 years.
Planting depth is critical: saplings must be placed deep enough so their roots can access water during the hot, dry summer months. We also ensure we plant at an age where the trees have minimal leaf coverage, which reduces water demand during the vulnerable early growth phase.
To protect the saplings from fast-growing vegetation and browsing animals such as deer, each young tree is fitted with a protective sleeve made from recycled materials. This sleeve is stabilized with a durable rod driven into the ground, helping prevent damage from wind and wildlife while also making the young trees easier to locate once the surrounding vegetation starts to regrow.
This care and attention in the early years is essential. Without it, thorny bushes, ivy, and aggressive weeds can quickly overwhelm the saplings, and deer may nibble away the young leaves—often killing the tree before it has a chance to take root.
At Forest4Future, planting trees is not just about placing saplings in the ground. It’s about restoring life, securing long-term carbon capture, and rebuilding a thriving, biodiverse environment for generations to come.
